What is the difference between those who are successful in life and those who aren’t? Successful people have a successful gaol strategy and they are prepared to put in the work to realise those goals.

The S.M.A.R.T method is an effective method for setting goals. Goals must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Specific. The more specific your goals are the more likely you will succeed, clarity is essential. For instance, you want to lose weight is general but losing 20 pounds is specific.

You must specify what steps you have to take along the way, ensuring that you prioritise the most important thing you need to do each day as you progress along the way.

Measurable. When you measure your progress you are more likely to stay on track, what doesn’t get measured is less likely to be accomplished. The more it gets broken down to measurable steps the better, you keep your motivation going as you achieve each small step.

Attainable. When you identify goals that are most important to you, you can begin a plan for the way to make them come true. You may need to new attitudes, skills or finances to succeed. Remember, you must grow to a higher level to succeed. The great thing about the mind is that it can grow to fit the new demands. Unfortunately, many people are under-achieving due to fear of failure or lack of belief in their own ability.

Find out what are the obstacles that may be in your way, the greatest obstacles people faces are the ones in their own mindset. If you can overcome your mindset obstacles, you will find a way of overcoming the external obstacles.

In addition to resources and resourcefulness, other people will play a part in your success. The support of people inside and outside you family will be required. However, if you are to be successful it will be depended on the factors that you have control over, not what is in the control of others.

Realistic.  You must be both willing and able to work towards your goal. The lower the effort and the the the value of the goal, the more realistic it is. the easiest goals to achieve are the ones that are a labour of love. Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished.

Timely. It is very important that you set specific times for the achievement of the steps along the journey of goal achievement.

On a final note.

Write down your goals. Research shows that people who write down their goals are the ones most likely to be successful. Write the long-term goal and then break it down to a daily basis. So, at the end of each day, you have your specific action for the following day.

As you drift off to sleep each night visualise the long-term goal as though it was already achieved. What would it look like, feel like, sound like when you were living having your goal achieved.
